Laois Context: In 1937 the Irish Folklore Commission initiated a revolutionary scheme wherein schoolchildren were encouraged to collect and document folklore and history in their neighbourhood. This became known as ‘The Schools Collection’. Topics included local history and monuments, folktales and legends, riddles and proverbs, songs, customs and beliefs, games and pastimes, traditional work practices and crafts, etc. The children collected this material mainly from their parents, grandparents and elders of the local community. This material is housed at the National Folklore Collection, UCD and digitised on :www.duchas.ie
